The HRB 754 is designed as a standalone instrument that requires no external PC. It
has a CERAN® heating plate for the sample beaker, dual position sample holder and a
laser detection system. It comes with a TFT touch screen display and a tactile keyboard.

Operation
In view of the complicated processes involved in manual measurement of softening point,
Herzog has developed the automatic softening point analyzer the HRB 754 series. The
HRB754 follows the well-respected predecessor model MC753 which has been the
industry standard for automatic softening point determinations.
Simply place the prepared test rings and balls onto the test insert. Place this assembly
along with a magnetic stirring bar into the test beaker filled with the appropriate bath
liquid. Then, set the test beaker on the heating plate, insert the sample RTD, input the
sample ID, select a pre-programmed test method, and press START. All the time
consumed with the heating rate control and the softening point detection will be done
automatically by the instrument. After the test is completed a buzzer will sound and the
temperatures at which the softening points occurred will be displayed on the touch
screen. The only thing left for the operator to do is to remove the beaker and either
record the result, print it out on the optional printer, or transfer the data to the LIMS
system
Network
To connect several Analyzers to one PC with a Laboratory Information System (LIMS) or
to a printer, the units can be linked together by the CAN bus. It is possible to link up to 16
units. Connect with cable (626-217) to the socket “CAN“ at the back of the instrument.

Samples
The softening point determination is an empirical method. It is therefore
important to comply with the standard specifications as accurately as
possible, both in respect of the equipment and in respect of procedures.
Two horizontal disks of bitumen, resin or rosin, cast in brass rings, are
heated at a controlled rate in a liquid bath while each supports a steel ball
of a certain mass. The softening point is reported as the mean of the
temperatures at which the two disks soften enough to allow each ball,
enveloped in material, to fall a distance of 25 mm.
The instrument has a convenient bracket for lifting and holding the test
insert after the test. It allows hot bath liquid to drip back into the beaker
and also allows the test insert and sample to cool prior to handling.
The test procedures are standardized and laid down in the above-mentioned standards.
The measurement period is approximately 5 to 40 minutes, depending on the softening
point of the material. With manual measurements, high requirements are set for the
laboratory technician carrying out the measurement, both in respect of the handling of the
sample and in respect of the subsequent cleaning of the equipment.
